{"id":22062,"date":"2023-08-27T01:27:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-26T15:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.suzilove.com\/?p=22062"},"modified":"2023-08-07T20:45:30","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T10:45:30","slug":"claridges-hotel-mayfair-london-u-k-londons-historic-places-london-britishhistory-claridgeshotel-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.suzilove.com\/?p=22062","title":{"rendered":"Claridge&#8217;s Hotel, Mayfair, London, U.K. London&#8217;s Historic Places. #London #BritishHistory #ClaridgesHotel #travel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Claridge&#8217;s Hotel \u2013 London&#8217;s Historic Places Claridge&#8217;s was\u00a0founded in 1812, during the Regency Era, as Mivart&#8217;s Hotel\u00a0at 51\u00a0Brook Street, Mayfair, London, UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.suzilove.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/1920_ClaridgesHotel_BrookStreet_Sml.jpeg\" alt=\"Claridge's 1920 Hotel Map, London, U.K\" class=\"wp-image-32505\" width=\"273\" height=\"248\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lord William Beauclerk leased the terrace house from the Grosvenor Estate with permission to turn it into a hotel run by James Edward Mivart, the\u00a0anglicized name for French chef\u00a0Jacques Mivart.\u00a0 By 1838, the hotel\u00a0grew to buy\u00a0five consecutive houses along Brook Street, knocking down the walls to create one large hotel\u00a0and Mivart prospered by introducing English county families to subtle French cooking to replace their traditional stodgy fare. Mivart designed the hotel for guests who wished to stay longer, so apartments were let by the month to foreign royalty and nobility who enjoyed the ambiance of the well-run hotel yet had the privacy of their own suites.\u00a0The Prince Regent, who succeeded to the throne as\u00a0King George IV\u00a0in 1820, had a suite of rooms permanently reserved for him so he could\u00a0discreetly\u00a0carry on his playboy lifestyle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.suzilove.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/ClaridgesHotel_RedBrick_modern_Sml.jpg\" alt=\"Claridges_Red Brick Claridge's Hotel, London, U.K.\" class=\"wp-image-32512\" width=\"297\" height=\"240\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1827,&nbsp;<em>The Morning Post<\/em>&nbsp;noted that Mivart&#8217;s was the fashionable rendezvous for the high&nbsp;Corps Diplomatique. In 1854, the hotel was sold to Mr and Mrs Claridge&nbsp;who ran a separate hotel at 49 Brook Street.&nbsp;They combined the two operations to trade as &#8220;Mivart&#8217;s at Claridge&#8217;s&#8221;&nbsp;until, after Mivart&#8217;s death, the hotel changed its name to Claridge&#8217;s in 1856, adding &#8220;late Mivart&#8217;s&#8221; underneath.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1860, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the Empress Eug\u00e8nie of France, who had made Claridge&#8217;s her winter quarters, and&nbsp;Queen Victoria was so impressed that she wrote to her uncle, Leopold I, King of the Belgians, in glowing terms of Claridge&#8217;s. The hotel became&nbsp;so&nbsp;connected to royalty it was called an &#8220;extension to&nbsp;Buckingham Palace&#8221;.including the Grand Duke Alexander of Russia and King William III of the Netherlands, until by 1853,&nbsp;<em>The Times<\/em>&nbsp;decided London had just three first-class hotels- Mivart&#8217;s, The Clarendon in Bond Street and Thomas&#8217;s in Berkeley Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1881, William Claridge&#8217;s failing health forced them to sell to a consortium, but the hotel consisted of several private houses and couldn&#8217;t be upgraded to compete with purpose built hotels cropping up all over London. The Savoy for example, built in 1889, offered lifts to all floors, electricity, en suite bathrooms and the best chef in Europe, Auguste Escoffier. \u00a0So in 1894, Richard D&#8217; Oyly Carte, founder of the rival\u00a0Savoy Hotel, purchased Claridge&#8217;s and\u00a0commissioned CW Stephens, designer of Harrods, to rebuild the hotel from the ground up. Stephens, architect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After World War I, Claridge&#8217;s flourished due to demand from aristocrats who no longer maintained a London house and Carte&#8217;s son,\u00a0Rupert D&#8217; Oyly Carte, added a new extension.
