Christmas: Saint Nicholas Visits On Christmas Eve <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Visit from St. Nicholas By Clement Clarke Moore<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In hope that St. Nicholas soon would be there;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Away to the window I flew like a flash,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moon, on the breast of the new-fallen snow,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gave a lustre of midday to objects below;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a little old driver, so lively and quick<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he whistled and shouted and called them by name;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, dash away, dash away, dash away all!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, up to the house-top the coursers, they flew,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a sleigh full of toys, \u2014and Saint Nicholas, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then in a twinkling I heard on the roof<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I drew in my head and was turning around,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Down the chimney Saint Nicholas came with a bound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he looked like a pedlr just opening his pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His eyes how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had a broad face and a little round belly<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was chubby and plump, \u2014a right jolly old elf\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And laying his finger aside of his nose,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
