{"id":32620,"date":"2023-08-30T19:44:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-30T09:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.suzilove.com\/?p=32620"},"modified":"2023-08-15T20:08:43","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T10:08:43","slug":"1800s-early-the-metropolitan-police-in-jane-austen-and-bridgerton-years-london-janeausten-bridgerton-britishhistory-regencyera-police-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.suzilove.com\/?p=32620","title":{"rendered":"1800s Early  The Metropolitan Police In Jane Austen and Bridgerton Years, London. #JaneAusten #Bridgerton #BritishHistory #RegencyEra #police #London"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Metropolitan Police, London\u00a0Before 1829<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Policing in the 17th and 18th centuries &#8211; one unarmed able-bodied citizen in each parish a man was appointed or elected annually to serve for a year unpaid as parish constable.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Worked in co-operation with the local Justices in observing laws and maintaining order.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In towns, responsibility for the maintenance of order was conferred on the guilds&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Later conferred on other specified groups of citizens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These supplied bodies of paid men, known as The Watch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Watch guarded the gates and patrolled the streets at night<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Huge social and economic changes and increases in town populations meant parish constables and Watch systems couldn&#8217;t cope.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1812, 1818 and 1822, Parliamentary committees investigated crime and policing.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impotence of the law-enforcement machinery was a serious menace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conditions became intolerable and led to the formation of the New Police<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Metropolitan Police<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Established by an Act of Parliament in 1829 by Sir Robert Peel <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peel appointed 2 Commissioners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appointed 895 Constables, 88 Sergeants, 20 Inspectors and 8 Superintendents.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Superseded the local Watch in the London area but the City of London was not covered.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Numbers increased<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grew to include the Greater London area (excluding the City of London)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Included parts of the Home Counties and all Royal Naval Dock Yards throughout the country.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First officer was given the warrant number \u20181\u2019&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Today the service is reaching near to a quarter million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The warrant number is unique to the officer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Different from the shoulder number which changes as the officer moves stations.&nbsp; <strong>Scotland Yard<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colonel Charles Rowan and Richard Mayne organized and designed the New Police<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The two Commissioners occupied a private house at 4, Whitehall Place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The back opened on to a courtyard and used as a police station<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This address led to the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police being known as Scotland Yard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet<\/strong>, (5 February 1788 \u2013 2 July 1850) British\u00a0Conservative\u00a0statesman who served twice as\u00a0Prime Minister of the United Kingdom,\u00a0Chancellor of the Exchequer, and\u00a0Home Secretary.
