\u201cMama, why doesn\u2019t that man like me?\u201d Daniel asked, his singsong voice echoing loudly around the walled chamber. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slowly, the Captain turned to face them. He took two steps closer to Daniel and squatted as low as he could manage on one leg, while keeping his bandaged leg straight and using it for balance. \u201cI apologize, your lordship.\u201d He spoke directly to Daniel. \u201cMy name is Gabe, and I don\u2019t dislike you. In fact, you remind me of my three nephews and I like them. A lot.\u201d He sighed. \u201cI have several decisions to make, difficult decisions, but that isn\u2019t an excuse for bad manners.\u201d He glanced up at Anne. \u201cAs I\u2019m certain your mother has told you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel nodded. \u201cUncle Bren told me to be good for Mama, and you, \u2018cause you\u2019re the Captain and you\u2019re taking me and Mama to En\u2026En\u2026\u201d He tugged on her hand. \u201cWhere are we going, Mama?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anne smiled at her son. \u201cEngland, darling. We\u2019re going to England.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel pulled his hand from hers and stepped up to the Captain, careful to avoid his bandaged leg. His tiny hand rested on Gabe\u2019s shoulder and he patted him. \u201cMy mama will help. Mama knows \u2018bout Englin, and she makes sores better.\u201d He pointed at Gabe\u2019s outstretched leg. \u201cKisses make it better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anne gasped, while Gabe chuckled. His amber eyes held a twinkle as he spoke to Daniel. \u201cI\u2019m sure your mama\u2019s kisses would make any man feel better.\u201d He looked up at her and smirked. \u201cWill you kiss me, Lady Melton?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anne groaned and put her hands to her burning cheeks, thankful that Daniel\u2019s focus was on his new friend and not her red face. When Gabe stood and slowly drew his bandaged leg under him, Anne realized that he didn\u2019t have his crutch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCaptain, please, lean on me.\u201d She moved closer and was relieved when, with a muffled groan, he slid his arm around her shoulder and settled a little of his weight on her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
