Do you love the history associated with Grosvenor Square? \u202fThe Jamison family in <a href=\"https:\/\/books2read.com\/suziloveES\">Embracing Scandal <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/books2read.com\/suziloveSS\">Scenting Scandal<\/a> live in Grosvenor Square. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grosvenor Square\u202f-\u202fPronounced\u202f\u02c8\u0261rovna&#8217;, is a large\u202fgarden square\u202fin the exclusive\u202fMayfair\u202fdistrict and the\u202fcentrepiece of the Mayfair property of the\u202fDuke of Westminster\u202fand takes its name from their surname, &#8220;Grosvenor&#8221;.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1710,   Sir\u202fRichard Grosvenor\u202fobtained a licence to develop Grosvenor Square and the surrounding streets and development started around 1721. Grosvenor Square became one of the most fashionable residential addresses in London from its construction until the\u202fSecond World War, with numerous leading members of the aristocracy in residence.\u202fThe early houses had five or seven\u202fbays, basement, three main stories, and an attic. Colen Campbell\u202fproduced a design for a palatial east side to the square featuring thirty\u202fCorinthian\u202fcolumns but this was not carried out and in the end most of the houses were built to individual designs. There were\u202fmews\u202fbehind all four sides.\u202fMany houses were rebuilt later and acquired an extra storey.   Number 23 (later 26) was rebuilt in 1773\u201374 for the\u202f11th Earl of Derby\u202fby\u202fRobert Adam\u202fand shows how grandeur of effect and sophisticated planning might be achieved on a confined site. It was demolished and rebuilt again in the 1860s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1761 &#8211; Sir Richard Grosvenor, the 7th Baronet, was created\u202fBaron Grosvenor\u202fof Eaton in the County of Chester  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1784 &#8211; Became Viscount Belgrave\u202fand\u202fEarl Grosvenor\u202funder\u202fGeorge III. \u202f <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> 1831- At coronation of William\u202fIV,\u202fRobert Grosvenor, the 2nd Earl Grosvenor,\u202fbecame\u202fMarquess of Westminster  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1874 &#8211; Queen Victoria created the title\u202f Duke of Westminster\u202fand bestowed it upon\u202fHugh Grosvenor, 3rd Marquess of Westminster.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Current title holder is\u202fGerald Grosvenor, 6th Duke of Westminster\u202fand his\u202fseat is at\u202fEaton Hall, Cheshire  The Dukedom and Marquessate are in the\u202fPeerage of the United Kingdom  The rest are in the\u202fPeerage of Great Britain.\u202fThe\u202fcourtesy title\u202fof the eldest son and heir to the Duke is\u202fEarl Grosvenor.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly all of the older houses were demolished during the 20th century and replaced with blocks of flats in a neo-Georgian style, hotels and embassies.\u202fThe central garden was originally reserved for the occupants of the houses but is now a public park managed by\u202fThe Royal Parks.  Grosvenor Square.  Grosvenor Square has been the traditional home of the official American presence in London since\u202fJohn Adams\u202festablished the first American mission to the\u202fCourt of St. James&#8217;s\u202fin 1785. Adams lived, from 1785 to 1788, in the house which still stands on the corner of Brook and Duke Streets.\u202fDuring World War II,\u202fEisenhower\u202festablished a military headquarters at 20 Grosvenor Square, and during this time the square was nicknamed &#8220;Eisenhower Platz&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  The former American Embassy of 1938\u20131960 on the square was purchased by the Canadian government and renamed\u202fMacdonald House.\u202fIn 1960, a modern USA Embassy\u202fwas built on the western side of Grosvenor Square\u202fand caused controversy in the mainly\u202fGeorgian\u202fand neo-Georgian area.\u202fIn 2008, the United States Government chose a site for a new embassy in the\u202fNine Elms\u202farea, south of the\u202fRiver Thames\u202fwith\u202fwith relocation completed by 2016 or 2017.\u202fIn October, 2009,\u202fEnglish Heritage\u202fgranted Grade II listed status to the building which means new owners will not be allowed to change the facade.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grosvenor Square in Literature  In\u202fLittle Dorrit\u202fby Charles Dickens the Barnacles are said to live at &#8220;four Mews Street Grosvenor&#8221; which &#8220;was not absolutely Grosvenor Square itself but it was very near it&#8221;.  Caroline Bingley makes a comment regarding the local dance in\u202fPride and Prejudice\u202f&#8221;We are a long way from Grosvenor Square, are we not, Mr Darcy&#8221;.  It appears in the title of several novels including\u202fThe Lonely Lady of Grosvenor Square\u202fby\u202fMrs. Henry De La Pasture\u202f(1907)\u202fand\u202fThe House in Grosvenor Square\u202fby Linore Rose Burkard (2009)  In Oscar Wilde&#8217;s play\u202fLady Windermere&#8217;s Fan, the Duchess of Berwick says, &#8220;I think on the whole that Grosvenor Square would be a more healthy place to reside in.
