1805 Regency Group of Fashionable Ladies and Gentlemen in Jane Austen years. #RegencyEra #RegencyFashion #JaneAusten

Suzi Love Posted on October 31, 2026 by Suzi LoveOctober 21, 2026

1805 Regency Group of Ladies and Gentlemen dressed as Jan Austen and her family and friends would have dressed. Ladies in dresses, bonnets, shawls, gloves, and carrying a reticule, or bag, and a parasol. Gentlemen in tailcoats, overcoats, trousers, vests, cravats, hats, boots and shoes and carrying walking sticks. via Men And Women In Costumes, 1804-1829. The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division, The New York Public Library, U.S.A.

Description: Early 1800s Women’s Fashion: Typical outfits worn for daytime activities included an Empire style, or high-waisted, white cotton dress worn under a Spencer or short jacket, a Redingote, or coat, for warmth and with pretty hats, shawls and shoes. Reticules, or bags, were carried as these light dresses no longer had pockets.

Description: Cashmere Shawls: Beautiful and very expensive shawls originating from Kashmir in Europe, but spelled by Englishmen Cashmere. Fine, soft, and delicate wool provided by goats is woven in a long and complicated process.

Description: Early 1800s Men’s Fashion: By the early 19th century, men’s fashions had radically changed. Coats finished in long tails at the back and cut higher in front. Waist-length square-cut waistcoat showed beneath coats. Shoulders and upper chest of the coat was sometimes quilted to improve the fit and some dandies wore boned corsets to give them a small waist. Gradually, men adopted long trousers which were worn for day and informal dress but breeches were still worn at places like court and Almack’s Assembly Rooms.

1806  Young French Gentleman. Brown Castorine Coat Over Blue Tailcoat, French. #RegencyEra #JaneAusten #HistoricalFashion

Suzi Love Posted on October 24, 2026 by Suzi LoveOctober 21, 2026

1806  Young French Gentleman. Brown Castorine Coat Over Blue Tailcoat, French. White cashmere breeches, white stockings, yellow gloves, black hat and a cane. Fashion Plate via Journal des Dames et des Modes, or Costume Parisien.

French fashions and Georgian and Regency Era fashions from Great Britain were copied around the world. This is the normal daily outfit for a gentleman in the early 1800s, or in the times of Jane Austen, for daily city and country life.

Le Beau Monde magazine made suggestions for men’s fashion in November 1806.

“The neckcloth should, by no means, be too greatly puffed out; but should be neatly united in front with a large unspread bow. Dark bottle green coats will be as generally worn this season, as those of brown colours were last winter.

“For morning dress frock coats will be prevalent: those of an olive hue, with a black velvet collar, will be the most universal. Fancied waistcoats of all manufactures may be worn with this kind of coat; but fashion ordains the invariable use of dark blue or light-coloured kerseymere pantaloons, and half-boots. The boots must rise somewhat higher in the leg than has recently been the custom, and the toes of them should be formed into a perfect semi-cirlce.

“Full dress coats will likewise be made of dark green cloth, double-breasted, and will possess the similar ornament of a black velvet collar. Single-breasted white waistcoats, and light-coloured kerseymere breeches will be in much estimation. Either flesh-coloured or now-white silk stockings fashion now considered as elegant.

“The hair, for morning dress, should be cut à la Titus; for full dress, it should be powdered. Buckles for the shoes are employed in full dress; but ribbands are allowed in afternoon or dinner dress.”

1815 First Quadrille at Almack’s Assembly Rooms, London. #Regency #JaneAusten #Dancing

Suzi Love Posted on October 17, 2026 by Suzi LoveOctober 13, 2026

1815 The First Quadrille at Almack’s Assembly Rooms, London. Left to Right: Marquis of Worcester, Lady Jersey, Clanronald MacDonald and Lady Worcester. “It was not until 1815 that Lady Jersey introduced from Paris the favourite quadrille, which has so long remained popular. I recollect the persons who formed the very first quadrille that was ever danced at Almack’s: they were Lady Jersey, Lady Harriett Butler, Lady Susan Ryde, and Miss Montgomery; the men being the Count St Aldegonde, Mr Montgomery, Mr Montague, and Charles Standish.” From The Reminiscences of Captain Gronow 1810-1860.

The patronesses of Almack’s controlled a lot of a young lady’s acceptance into English society in Jane Austen’s times. To be given a voucher and admitted to an assembly, there was an introduction into London’s polite society.
