1801 November Men and women play cards at a table. #JaneAusten #Regency #Cartoon #BritishMuseum

Suzi Love Posted on June 16, 2025 by Suzi LoveJune 14, 2025

1801 November 9th  Playing Cards. Men and women play cards at round table. Supreme Bon Ton Plate 2. Published by S W Fores. Men and women play cards at round table. Man and woman talk to players. Woman sleeps in upright chair, two others, one with parasol and other fan, walk off arm-in-arm.Men: High-waisted coats, high collars, huge neck-cloths, with pumps or Hessian boots. Women: High-waisted dresses, short sleeves, long trains, very low necklines, short ringlets, two in caps. Via British Museum, London, UK. britishmuseum.org (PD-Art)

In Jane Austen’s times, cartoons posted in the windows of shops were one of the main ways people found news. Common people couldn’t afford newspapers so cartoonists ridiculed the people and the places with cartoons of the daily events happening in London and other cities. The ridiculous fashion trends of the late 1700s and early 1800s were easy targets for satirical cartoons as was the addiction to gambling by women and men alike.

19th Century Mechanical Tantalus For Drinks made of Baccarat Glass As Used In the Bridgerton and Jane Austen years. #bridgerton #janeausten #RegencyEra #Drink

Suzi Love Posted on June 15, 2025 by Suzi LoveJune 15, 2025

19th Century Mechanical Tantalus For Drinks made of Baccarat Glass, French. This type of small drinks cabinet would have been used in most households during the Bridgerton family’s and Jane Austen’s times, unless the householders were teetotalers. via 1st Dibs Auctions 1stdibs.com

Tantalus: A small wooden cabinet containing drink decanters. The box has a lock and key to keep unauthorised people from drinking the contents e.g. servants and younger sons, yet still allowing the decanters of drinks to be on show. The word, Tantalus, is a reference to the unsatisfied temptations of the Greek mythological character Tantalus. Patented in the UK in 1881 by George Betjemann, a cabinet maker from the Netherlands, whose workshop was on Pentonville Road, London from the 1830s.

1801 White Evening Full Dress with long pink shawl, French. #RegencyFashion #JaneAusten #HistoricalFashion

Suzi Love Posted on June 12, 2025 by Suzi LoveJune 12, 2025

1801 Evening Full Dress, French. White dress, extra long pink shawl, pink turban, white feather. Fashion Plate via Journal des Dames et des Modes, or Costume Parisien.

The Empire waist gown defined women’s fashion during the Regency Era. ‘Empire’ is the name given in France to the period when Napoleon built his French Empire. High-waisted, loose gowns were adopted by the aristocracy as a symbol of turning away from the fussy, elaborate and expensive clothing worn in the 1700s.

1801 Evening Full Dress, French. White dress, extra long pink shawl, pink turban, white feather. Fashion Plate via Journal des Dames et des Modes, or Costume Parisien.

Jean-Jaques Rousseau advocated copying peasants and returning to a simpler life and more natural fashions. Unrestricting clothing was part of the new Democracy in France and these simpler and flowing fashions were adopted all over Europe, including Britain and despite the continual wars being fought against France during the early 1800s. Not even war stopped fashions from being copied everywhere.
