1826 A Regency Gentleman’s Life In Jane Austen’s Times. #JaneAusten #RegencyEra #Cartoon #England. via 1826 The English Spy By Robert Cruikshank via Google Books (PD-150)

The young man’s friends may help him decide what activities they would engage in.  Perhaps they would decide to watch a dogfight or a cockfight.  Or perhaps go and see a mill, where two burly boxers would pummel each other’s faces until one was declared winner and bets could be settled. Later that night, the rowdy group would head to whatever gambling hell was in vogue where they would pass several hours drinking and playing cards. Dark and sordid rooms, smoky interiors, loud and drunken men, and losing your quarter’s allowance from your father were all willingly suffered if a  young man had enticed a buxom wench to sit on his lap and make him forget his woes. And how angry his father would be when he learned his son had gambled away yet another three months of his allowance.

Having filled in their morning, the men wander into Town to meet their cronies for luncheon. Thank goodness it’s time for a few bottles of claret!!  Just the thing for fixing a hang-over, plus, a great place to discuss how to eke out their never-enough allowances until the young men could beg their long-suffering fathers for a little more spending money.

Price Egan’s ‘Life In London in 1823 described a young man’s entertainment choices.  ‘ …bit of a stroll,’ in order to get rid of an hour or two. A turn or two in Bond Street, a stroll through Piccadilly, a look in at Tattersall’s, a ramble through Pall Mall, and a strut on the Corinthian path, fully occupied the time until the hour for dinner arrived, when a few glasses of rich wine put them on the path for vice.’ A group of young men would then head to Vauxhall. ‘‘…if enjoyment is your motto, you may make the most of an evening at Vauxhall, more than at any other place in the metropolis. It is all free-and-easy. Stay as long as you like, and depart when you think proper.’

Suzi Love Posted on August 9, 2025 by Suzi LoveAugust 9, 2025

There has been some discussion on the names for Corset Makers. I’ve seen lots of names, including Stay Maker, Stay Manufacturer, Corset Maker, Body Tailor and Milliner. It was mainly men who were Stay Makers, but there were also some women who included stay making with their millinery.

An overview of women’s fashions in the first twenty years of the 19th century. What was fashionable for women in Jane Austen’s times, or the early 1800s. Wars were being fought around the globe so women’s fashion adopted a military look in support of soldiers. In Britain, the Prince Regent ruled instead of his father, King George III, so fashions, like the lifestyle, became more extravagant and accessories went from pretty to opulent.

Reader Or Writer of Regency Era? Love Jane Austen and Bridgerton fashions? What was fashionable for women in Jane Austen’s times, or 1800s, or Regency Era. High-waisted dresses were extravagantly accessorized and hats, shoes, parasols and bags were added. Set includes History Notes Books 12, 25, 26, 27 and 28. https://books2read.com/SuziLoveFashionWomenBoxSet

Ladies clothing in the early 1800’s featured a high waist line called an Empire Line, or Empire style dress, with a waist line just under the natural bust line and much higher than the natural waist. The high-waisted, or short-bodied, Regency styles shifted focus away from the natural waist and so left the natural waist unconstricted, in direct contrast to previous and future styles. Britain took these simple European styles and progressively made them more elaborate by adding more and more complicated embroidery onto white fabrics to create the white on white look popular for many years.

The empire look of fine muslin dresses left women more exposed than in the Georgian Era when fabrics had been thicker and styles bulkier. Women, especially in England, preserved their modesty by adding lace, frills, flounces, ruches, and fabric plaits to dresses to adequately cover any parts that might inadvertently be exposed. Outer layers, such as Spencers, Redingotes or Pelisses or coats, and shawls, were also added for warmth and to brighten outfits. This Empire fashion was totally dependent on a supply of fine, translucent cotton muslin – at first imported from India, then later, less exclusive imitations often woven and printed or embroidered in Britain. Fabrics were soft and lightweight and muslins and other cotton fabrics from India and other Asian countries were in high demand.

1800s Early Different Degrees Of Nobility In Great Britain In Bridgerton and Jane austen Years.#bridgerton #janeausten  #peerage #BritishHistory #RegencyEra #debretts

Suzi Love Posted on June 8, 2025 by Suzi LoveJune 8, 2025

1800s Different Degrees Of Nobility In Great Britain and Ireland. FIVE LEVELS.

1828_DifferentDegreesPeerage_Debretts

BENEATH THESE COME THE BARONS:  The rank and precedence of Baronets is immediately after the younger sons of Barons, and before all Knights, whether of the Order or Knights. When the Order of Baronets was first instigated, its numbers were limited to 200. Members were carefully selected from the most wealthy and distinguished families of landed gentry. In the reign of the first Charles, it was the stimulus and reward for devoted loyalty. Later, it was often bestowed as an honorary recompense for sufferings and attachment when royalty was unable or unwilling to give solid remuneration. FROM: 1835 Debrett’s Baronetage of England

PRINCES of the BLOOD ROYAL: The Sovereign’s sons, brothers, and uncles are styled Princes of the Blood Royal, and have precedency of all other dukes, with the title of Royal Highness, which title was also, by special warrant, in 1816, conferred on the duke of Gloucester, deceased, and, 6th April 1818, on Prince Leopold of Saxe Cobourg (King of the Belgians).    FROM: 1840 Debrett’s Peerage of the UK

  • THE PRIVILEGES OF THE PEERS OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND.  The nobility of England enjoy many great privileges, the principal of which are as follow:-
  • 1. They are free from all arrest for debts, as being the king’s hereditary counsel
  • lors. Therefore a peer cannot be outlawed in any civil action and no attachment lies against his Person. This privilege extended also to their members of the lower house, till the year 1770, when their lordships joined the house of commons in a bill for abolishing it.
  • 2. In criminal causes they are only tried by their peers, who give their verdict, not upon oath as other juries, but only upon their honor: and then a court is fitted up for the purpose in the middle of Westminster hall, at the king’s charge.
  • 3. To secure the honor of, and prevent the spreading of any scandal upon peers, or any great officer of the realm,there is an express law called scanda lum magnutum by which any man convicted of making a scandalous report against a peer of the realm ( though true ) is condemned to an arbitrary fine , and to remain in custody till the same be paid .
  • 4. Upon any great trial in a court of justice a peer may come into the court and sit there uncovered. No peer can be covered in the royal presence without permission for that purpose, except the lord baron of Kinsale, of his majesty’s kingdom of Ireland.  In case of the poll tax, the peers bear the greatest share of the burden, they being taxed every one according to his degree.
