1809 Wedgwood and Byerley showrooms for Wedgwood china, York Street, London, UK. Plate via Rudolph Ackermann’s Repository of Arts. The premises of master potter Josiah Wedgwood in York Street, St James’ Square, London, U.K. Wedgwood china was known for its high quality, beautiful glazes and Wedgwood trademark printed on the back of each item. The London show-room was managed by Thomas Byerley, who also held a quarter share of the business. From 1790 to 1810 the firm was known as Wedgwood and Byerley. Josiah Wedgwood had smallpox as a child with left him with a weakened knee so he couldn’t work the foot pedal of a potter’s wheel. Instead, he concentrated on designing pottery and unique glazes. By 1763, he was commissioned by high ranking British people, including Queen Charlotte.

In 1780, his longtime partner died and Wedgwood’s left leg had been amputated so he asked Erasmus Darwin to help run the business and their children married. The Wedgwood inheritance allowed Charles Darwin to pay for being a naturalist. From 1786 to 1789, Wedgwood took on the project of duplicating the Portland Vase from the 1st century BD. His two sons took over the business and Josiah died at home in 1795. During his life, he helped invent modern marketing and direct mail, money-back guarantees, traveling salesmen, self-service, free deliver, buy one get one free and illustrated catalogs.

How did Jane Austen seal her letters? 1808 Silver Wax Jack With Coil Of Red Wax, Irish. #JaneAusten #RegencyEra #writing #postal

1808 Silver Wax Jack, Irish. By Robert Breading (active 1775–1822) Dublin. via suzilove.com and Metropolitan Museum New York City, U.S.A. metmuseum.org

How did Jane Austen seal her letters? Wax was melted by lighting the tip of a coiled wax length. This is called a wax jack. The melted wax blob was placed on the outside of a letter or document. A personal desk seal or a fob seal was pressed into the wax to identify the sender or owner of the document. Aristocrat families had their own coat of arms and others may have had their initials or their name on the seal.

Want to know about music in the households of Jane Austen and the Bridgertons? Music history from the 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries. #Music #Bridgerton #RegencyEra #JaneAusten #GeorgianEra

Suzi Love Posted on August 5, 2026 by Suzi LoveAugust 4, 2026

Music history from the 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries. Pianos, pianofortes, harps, viols, violins played during Jane Austen’s times. Musical Instruments were so important in most of the more affluent households in history that large industries grew all around the world to manufacture instruments, musical accessories, and to print sheet music. Musical instruction and encouragement could be found everywhere and both young ladies and gentlemen were encouraged to have musical appreciation. And of course, playing music was on the list of social requirements for all young ladies desirous of becoming a wife and homemaker.

London became Europe’s leading centre for the manufacture of scientific instruments and this led to the manufacture of more musical instruments as well as factories developed and rail transport helped the faster distribution of goods to regional areas. One of the first places that music was used to tell stories and to share enjoyment was in Christmas music. Because music was such an integral part of households, music was always a feature in Magazines. There were advertisements everywhere for musical instruments for sale, for sheet music, and for music lessons.  And of course, of most interest to the ladies were the hundreds of fashion plates included in magazines where people were depicted with their musical instruments.

What did travelers take with them to make long journeys easier in Bridgerton and Jane Austen times? #Bridgerton #JaneAusten #RegencyEra #HistoricTravel

Suzi Love Posted on August 1, 2026 by Suzi LoveAugust 1, 2026

How did people travel in Jane Austen and Bridgerton years? What did they take with them to make their long journeys easier?  Travel by road, ship, canal, or railway all took a long time and had dangers so people learned to prepare. And then, in the nineteenth century, road improvements, inventions, and scientific developments made travel more pleasurable. Travel and Luggage By Suzi Love History Notes Book 10 books2read.com/SuziLoveTravel

Horse Power To Steam. Various alternatives to horse power were tested in London’s streets during the 19th century. Steam powered road engines and trams proved too heavy and damaged the roads. Stationary steam engines were used to haul trams attached to a cable but these were only really effective on hills that we too steep for horses. There were also experiments with trams driven gas engines and battery electric power. but was successfully developed. Petrol engines were still primitive and unreliable in the 1890s. In 1900 the reliable horse still dominated the streets of London but new technology was to revolutionize road transport.

1811 Woman Carrying Cloth and a Package. Sewing a dress? #JaneAusten #Regencyfashion #historicalFashion #Sewing

Suzi Love Posted on July 27, 2026 by Suzi LoveJuly 11, 2026

1811 Woman Carrying Cloth and a Package. Sewing a dress? Green dress with a white bodice, green spotted cornet for a hat. Fashion Plate via Journal des Dames et des Modes, or Costume Parisien. Even though this a French fashion plate, this is typical of the Empire dresses worn by Jane Austen and her contemporaries. Low necklines and skirts that started directly under the bust and flowed into the classical relaxed wide styles of Greece and Rome. These high-waisted dresses were worn most days and cotton, silk or taffeta were the popular fabrics.
